"When we bought our Rosseau area cottage in 2016 we were in love with the land and cottage structure, but over time realized we needed a significant refresh. I was referred to Joy Crookshank at Red Canoe with high praise from a woman I met in the interior decorating field in Oakville, our home-town.
From the first, Joy was approachable, knowledgeable, and very intuitive. She quickly grasped where I wanted to go with design, and helped me build rough ideas into plans. We worked well together on both large (e.g. move a wall) and small (e.g. paint choices) decisions cobbling together a dream vision for our cottage. She was supportive and patient with my frequent reversals and alternative directions, and deeply respective of our shifting budget. We were able to mix ‘cheap and cheerful’ with solid big transitions.
Through Joy’s long-standing relationships with top contacts in the region, literally anything was possible! We sketched out a more beautiful floor plan (moving two walls) replaced and created new closets for much needed space for storage, replaced coffee tables (on a budget) and recovered furniture. Our 35 year-old turquoise sofas were transformed with perfectly tailored crisp red ticking slipcovers by her seamstress. We worked through color options for redoing kitchen cabinets, created light in dark spaces (with white paint on selected old pine walls) and updated our bathroom from shower stall to lovely soaker tub. Joy was there at the touch of a phone dial or email to advise on light fixtures, bathroom fixtures, lamp shades, and countertops. Throughout, Joy allowed me to make the decisions I wanted, giving me confidence and support or alternative suggestions when I was stuck. The final touches, candles, table top decorations and pretty touches (the squirrel candle holder is my favorite) all came from her beautifully stocked décor items at the Red Canoe (her now online store). We are absolutely thrilled with the result! The cottage is refreshed, light, airy, and comfortable while retaining the all-wood interior walls and ceiling and lakeside relaxation.
I would highly recommend Joy to anyone wanting to redecorate or redesign their living space. She is the best gift we have found with our relocation to the Parry Sound/Muskoka area!"
